Barrett’s Ridge was started by Tayrene and Kenny Barrett from their home and began just as a way to create gifts for family and friends. Since packing at Ukama Packing Solutions (starting in 2013) the business has grown into a national and international brand, selling in Woolworths nationally, independent retailers and deli’s throughout SA and overseas in Oxfam and other retailers in the UK as well as Hong Kong.
Charne Van Der Berg is the fabulous lady behind the packing of Barretts Ridge. Charne is a 25 year old single mom from Seawinds. Charne started her own Micro-Enterprise with Ukama in 2014 and employs 2 permanent staff and 2 casual staff. Under Ukama Packing Solutions guidance, certification and business development she has successfully built her own Micro-Enterprise which acts as the supply chain for Barretts Ridge as well as other brands. Charne is a positive and vibrant person whose meticulous work shines through. At Ukama she is most famous for her distinctive laugh which you can hear ringing out throughout the day.
Ukama Packing Solution aims to create, train and facilitate micro enterprises in our fully certified facility so that Micro enterprises can act as contract packers for large companies. This is the heart of Ukama enterprise development: job creation and a way out of unemployment.
